birth control

I think I was just offended by a birth control commercial... it says "Candidates for Mirena should be ... involved in a stable, long-term relationship..." among other things.

What if you don't want to get pregnant and aren't in a relationship? They won't give it to you?

This wasn't the only requirement, some health things which obviously made sense, but this?

Candidates? Is it by prescription only?

Yeah... It's a 5-year thing that has to be inserted by a doctor.

i suspect...
the request is a result of wanting people who might have a regular intercourse routine and who might be available for good statistics...if it's a trial...

regardless it sounds wrong.

Re: i suspect...
It's not a trial. I don't think they are allowed to advertise medical trials on TV.

I think they are simply bowing to pressure from the religious right. And there is nothing about being single or in an unstable relationship that says you aren't having sex regularly... That's what I think they are upset about.

Re: i suspect...
definitely...

...i misunderstood the "5-year, inserted by a doctor" statement to imply that it was a medical trial over 5 years with supervision by a medical professional.

...it has been that kind of day.

Oh yeah, this commercial has been bugging me for a while. There is nothing in it to suggest why this would have to be a requirement and as far as I can tell, absolutely no medical reason for it. The part that bothered me was the "you must already have had children". Also not too many legitimate medical reasons I can think of for this requirement either. I was kinda pissed because something like that is definitely something I would love to get...but I haven't had kids, I don't want kids...that's kinda the point.

Yeah, that, too... But that didn't bother me as much as the relationship line. If they are concerned that it might adversely affect the ability to have kids later... Some things can be reversed, others not. This may be too new to know if it might cause future defects or whatever? So it did kinda bug me, but not as much as the relationship thing.
