false beliefs

Why is this article funny?

I'll give you a hint. It has nothing to do with the main topic, which is about some fool college student threatening to kill people in a shooting spree on his campus. Rather, it's the last line about the guy from Australia.

Jarrad Willis, 20, of Melbourne, was arrested after Los Angeles police detectives traced to Australia the address of his Internet provider. Willis has been charged in Australia with creating a false belief -- a violation of Australian law.

Notice the bolded sentence... creating a false belief is a crime. And there are still religions in Australia?

Creating a False Belief -- Australian Commonwealth Law
unfortunately, while the section of the law is called "Creating a False Belief", the section itself is very specific about the types of belief that are covered. religion could, arguably, be construed as " ... a fire that needs to be put out ...", but most people probably would not interpret the law to include it.

171 Creating false belief
(1) In this section:
belief means a belief or suspicion that:
(a) an offence has been or is about to be committed;
(b) human safety is or may be endangered;
(c) human life has or may have been lost;
(d) property is or may be endangered;
(e) property has or may have been destroyed;
(f) there is a fire that needs to be put out;
and that is of such a nature as would reasonably call for action by the Police Force or by emergency services.
